My old G5 kicked the bucket, taking my FCP 4.5 with it. I use an iMac, post 2007 for my life, but have no FCP on it.
So I need to purchase something that can run on it, for editing.
Here are the details:
iMac
20-inch, Mid 2007
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b)
Is there an older version that I could purchase that could manage the Intel processor? Money is tight, can't afford and not sure I could use the newest full version anyway, and I don't think this iMac is upgradable system-wise to Yosemite, anyway, though I know I can take it up to Maverick -- somehow.
Thanks, for any help.
Yosemite (10.1) works on your iMac.
If you don't want to spend any money, then install legacy Final Cut Pro from your original discs. This will work just fine for you.
For FCP X you would need to upgrade your system to Yosemite, because the newest (and only available) version needs Yosemite to run.
So you have the choice: FCP on Lion (free for you, if you have the Final Cut Studio install discs) or FCP X on Yosemite (that's $299 for you to get FCP X).

I do not have the disks -- the computer was loaded many years ago and they're 'lost' -- I need to know what to purchase. If I can't run FCP at all, what? Final Cut Studio?
Is my iMac capable of being upgraded to Yosemite? It was my understanding it could only go up as far as Maverick.
If you don't have the discs (anymore) then I would suggest to upgrade completely. Spend $299 for FCP X and all is good. Everything else will be a struggle over time.
Yosemite works on your Mid 2007 iMac. Read this about Yosemite:
